Mika Kaurismäki has a younger brother Aki, who is also film director; if you read Mika backwards, you get Akim.

Mika’s and Aki’s first production company’s name, Villealfa Filmproductions, was inspired by Jean-Luc Godard’s film Alphaville. Ville Alfa was also a character in Mika’s film The Worthless, played by Aki.

Mika’s production company’s name, Marianna Films, is based on the names of Mika’s daughters Maria and Anna-Maija.

Mika is co-founder of the legendary Moskova and Corona bars in Helsinki. He also used to run a music club in Rio de Janeiro, Mika’s Bar (1999-2001).

Mika Kaurismäki, together with Antti Piippo and Sergio Machado, has opened a Brazilian restaurant BOSSA on Annankatu 21 in Helsinki. The restaurant also has a separate bar and downstairs a club for live music. For more information, go to www.bossahelsinki.fi
